With just one click, the Trump campaign on Wednesday telegraphed one of its next punches against Hillary Clinton.
According to an email accidentally sent a reporter, presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump will be reviving the Whitewater scandal that involved Hillary and Bill Clinton’s real estate holdings.
Hope Hicks, Trump’s spokeswoman, had wanted to reply to an email from Trump campaign adviser Michael Caputo, but instead copied Politico’s Mark Caputo, Politico reported. The two are not related.
The email Hicks sent revealed that Michael Caputo had earlier asked a Republican National Committee researcher to “work up information on HRC/Whitewater as soon as possible,” saying the information was “for immediate use and for the afternoon talking points process.”
The Whitewater scandal focused on the Whitewater Development Corp. and allegations that Bill Clinton, when governor of Arkansas, arranged a $300,000 loan to the Clintons’ partner in the Whitewater deal. Although some people involved in the deal were convicted and the Justice Department drew up never-released indictments against Hillary Clinton, the Clintons were never charged with any crime.
Although the specifics of the latest Trump jab against Clinton were new, he has made no secret of his plans to revive Clinton scandals as part of his campaign.
“They said things about me which were very nasty. And I don’t want to play that game at all. I don’t want to play it — at all. But they said things about me that were very nasty,” Trump told The Washington Post. “And, you know, as long as they do that, you know, I will play at whatever level I have to play at. I think I’ve proven that.”
“It’s the one thing with her, whether it’s Whitewater or whether it’s Vince [Foster] or whether it’s Benghazi. It’s always a mess with Hillary,” Trump told the Post.
